Cancer Equality was founded in 1999 when a group of experts from the field of cancer care, information and support came together to address the needs of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities. The organisation was registered as a charity in 2001.

The group were keen to ensure that, despite the closure of BME specific cancer services, the knowledge, expertise and learning gained through these services should not be lost but built upon.

In the early years Cancer Equality designed and managed successful partnership projects aimed at addressing the information and support needs of people with cancer and their carers with other organisations such as The Afiya Trust and The Cancer Resource Centre In 2003 the organisation secured funding from the Department of Health to establish a national BME cancer resource centre. This directory forms part of this initiative.

Over the years Cancer Equality membership has grown and strives to reflect its users. Cancer Equality has steadily built up a good reputation and works with a number of key organisations to achieve its vision.
